Ascorbic Acid (VC), is an essential vitamin found in various foods(fresh fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits), and sold as a dietary supplement.
VC is needed for the body to develop and function properly.   It plays an important role in immune function, is involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters.  It also functions as an antioxidant.
Historically, VC was used for preventing and treating scurvy.   Today, people most commonly use VC for preventing and treating the common cold.   It's also used for autism, breast cancer, heart disease and many other conditions.
